Google Stadia

The future of gaming, cancelled

Shut down
19902026

Google Stadia was Google's cloud gaming platform, launched in November 2019 with the promise of console-quality games streamed to any screen. It never found an audience: Google closed its own game studios in 2021, denied shutdown rumours in mid-2022, then announced the end that September. Stadia went offline on 18 January 2023 with full refunds.

Why it shut down [edit]

Official line: Google said Stadia "hasn't gained the traction with users that we expected" and wound the service down, refunding all hardware and game purchases.

Our analysis: The technology worked; the business didn't. Buying games at full price on a service Google might kill was a bet gamers refused, first-party studios were shut before shipping anything, and Google's reputation for cancelling products became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

History [edit]

Console in the cloud

Announced on the GDC 2019 stage, Stadia was technically audacious: press a link, and a AAA game runs instantly in a data centre, streamed at 4K to a Chromecast, laptop or phone. Reviewers agreed the streaming largely worked. Google launched in November 2019 with a store where you bought games at full price, plus a Pro subscription tier.

That purchase model collided with Google's own reputation. Gamers asked the obvious question: what happens to my games when Google cancels this like everything else? The library stayed thin, exclusive titles never came, and in February 2021 Google shut its own Stadia Games & Entertainment studios before they had shipped a single game, taking Jade Raymond and any first-party ambitions with them.

The prophecy fulfils itself

Through 2022 the service was visibly coasting. In July, Stadia's official account tweeted that it was not shutting down. On 29 September 2022, Google announced it was shutting down. To its credit, the wind-down was graceful: every hardware purchase, game and add-on bought through the Stadia store was refunded, and a final update let Bluetooth controllers work with other platforms. The servers went dark on 18 January 2023, three years and two months after launch, and "getting Stadia'd" entered the gaming vocabulary as shorthand for platform betrayal.
