A map of how the world used to look.
Looks Back is a world map of old photographs. Every photo is pinned to the exact place it was taken and the year it was taken, so you can stand on a spot you know and watch it change across decades.
Why
Every family has a shoebox of photographs nobody else will ever see: a street before the new road, a shopfront that is now a bank, a square full of people in clothes from another time. On their own they are small. Pinned together on a map, they become something larger, a shared memory of places told by the people who were there.
How it works
You add a photo, mark where it was taken, and give it a year. A moderator takes a quick look to keep the map honest, and then it appears for everyone. Drag the years on the map and a place rebuilds itself in front of you.
The rules are simple
Real places. Honest dates, even if approximate. Photos you have the right to share. Respect for the people in them. That is most of it. The rest is in the guidelines.
