Google Allo was a smart messaging app launched in September 2016, the consumer half of Google's Allo/Duo pair. It introduced the Google Assistant and on-device Smart Reply, but arrived years too late to unseat WhatsApp. Google 'paused investment' in April 2018 and shut it down on 12 March 2019.

Why it shut down [edit]

Official line: Google announced in December 2018 that Allo would shut in March 2019 as it bet consumer messaging on RCS in Google Messages.

Our analysis: Launched years after WhatsApp had locked up the market, without SMS support at launch and sold alongside three other Google messengers. The smart features (Assistant, Smart Reply) moved to Messages; the app never had a reason to exist on its own.

Clever, and beside the point

Allo launched in September 2016 as Google's answer to WhatsApp: a phone-number-based messenger with a twist. It was the first home of the Google Assistant, which chatted inside your conversations, and Smart Reply suggested answers that learned your style. Incognito chats brought end-to-end encryption via Signal's protocol.

The problems were structural, not technical. WhatsApp had a billion users; Allo started at zero and required your friends to switch. It launched without SMS fallback, and it was Google's fourth concurrent messaging product alongside Hangouts, Duo and Messages, a lineup nobody could parse.

Paused, then buried

Allo never cracked meaningful adoption. In April 2018 Google "paused investment" and moved the team to Android Messages and the carrier-backed RCS standard, taking Smart Reply and the Assistant with it. The formal shutdown announcement came on 5 December 2018, bundled with news about Hangouts' own migration; Allo closed on 12 March 2019, two and a half years after launch, remembered mostly as the app whose best ideas shipped somewhere else.
