Haufig gestellte Fragen
What is the CPI and how does this calculator use it?
The Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) is published monthly by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. It measures how the average price of a fixed basket of consumer goods and services changes over time. This calculator divides the CPI of the target year by the CPI of the starting year, then multiplies by the original amount to produce an inflation-adjusted figure. This is identical to the formula used by the BLS's own official inflation calculator.
How accurate is this inflation calculator?
The calculator uses official CPI-U annual average data directly from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Results are as accurate as the official government data allows. Note that the CPI measures the average change for a fixed basket of goods; individual categories like housing and healthcare have risen faster than the overall CPI, while technology and clothing have risen slower.
What does cumulative inflation mean?
Cumulative inflation is the total percentage increase in prices over the entire period, not the annual rate. If cumulative inflation is 212% from 1980 to 2024, something costing $100 in 1980 costs $312 in 2024.
Can I calculate backward? What was $100 in 2024 worth in 1980?
Yes. Set 2024 as your from year and 1980 as your to year. The calculator works in both directions.
